Buying guide

How to choose a dog harness

A good harness is chosen according to your dog’s build, the way they walk on the lead and your walks. This guide sums up what to check before you buy, whether you choose a MyDogGrip harness or another model.

Harness or collar?

When the lead tightens, a collar presses on the neck, where the windpipe, blood vessels and nerves run. On an artificial neck, researchers measured high pressures with every collar tested (Carter et al., 2020). Another study found a rise in pressure inside the eye when a dog pulled against a collar, much smaller with a harness (Pauli et al., 2006).

A harness moves the load onto the chest. That is why it is often recommended for dogs that pull, small dogs and flat-faced breeds. A collar is still handy for carrying an ID tag. Harness or collar: what the studies say

The main types of dog harness

  • Y-shaped harness: a strap runs between the front legs and leaves the shoulders free. A very common shape for walks.
  • Horizontal-strap harness: a strap runs across the front of the chest. It is easy to put on but can restrict shoulder movement if badly positioned.
  • No-pull harness: it has a ring on the chest that turns the dog towards you when they pull.
  • Sports harness (canicross, bikejoring): it is designed for the dog to pull, the opposite of a no-pull harness.
  • Car safety harness: it is tested for restraint in a vehicle. A walking harness does not replace it.

Both MyDogGrip harnesses are no-pull walking harnesses, with a front clip, a back ring and a handle. They are not designed for canicross or for the car. What is a dog harness for?

Front clip or back clip?

The front clip, on the chest, helps you guide a dog that pulls: when they surge ahead, the lead turns them towards you. In a study of 23 shelter dogs, the dogs pulled less with a front-clip harness than with a martingale collar (Johnson and Wynne, 2024). It does not replace loose-lead training, and the lead can sometimes slip under the legs.

The back ring suits a dog that already walks calmly: the lead stays above the back and tangles less. With both, you can switch from one to the other as your dog progresses.

Finding the right size

The reliable measure is the chest girth: measure your dog standing, just behind the front legs, at the widest part of the ribcage, with a soft tape measure snug but not tight. Weight is only a guide: two 15 kg dogs can have very different chest girths.

MyDogGrip harnesses: S from 43 to 56 cm, M from 56 to 69 cm, L from 69 to 81 cm and XL from 81 to 107 cm. The personalised harness also comes in XS for dogs under 4 kg. See the size chart

Fitting the harness properly

  • The neck strap sits at the base of the neck, without pressing on the throat.
  • The belly strap runs behind the front legs, clear of the armpits to avoid rubbing.
  • You can slide two flat fingers under each strap, no more.
  • The harness stays centred when the dog walks and trots, without twisting to the side.

Check the fit again after grooming, after weight gain or loss, and every week for a puppy. Read more: how to put on a dog harness, the harness twists to the side and fitting a harness on a long-haired dog.

Harnesses for small dogs, large dogs and puppies

Small dogs: their neck and windpipe are delicate, so a harness is often better than a collar. Check that the smallest size covers your dog’s chest girth.

Large dogs: look for sturdy buckles, a handle to keep them close and a front clip if they pull. Always measure, as the ranges of the large sizes are wide.

Puppies: get your puppy used to the harness with short, positive sessions at home. They grow fast: adjust the straps every week and move up a size as soon as the range is exceeded. Puppy harness: from what age?

Being seen at dusk

In autumn and winter, many walks happen at dusk. Reflective elements bounce back the light from headlights and torches: the reflective harness has reflective strips, the personalised harness reflective stitching. On unlit roads, add a light or an LED collar.

A harness with your dog’s name

The personalised MyDogGrip harness has a hook-and-loop patch embroidered with your dog’s name (up to 12 characters, spaces included). You can also choose the MyDogGrip logo or a blank patch. A visible name helps a passer-by call your dog if they wander off, but it does not replace microchip identification. Long name: our tips

Care and lifespan

Brush the harness after muddy walks, remove the patch before any cleaning and let it dry in the open air, away from a radiator. Check the stitching, buckles and straps regularly, and replace a damaged harness. Read more: drying a harness after rain and cleaning the patch’s hook-and-loop. Frequently asked questions

Before you order

What is the difference between the two harnesses?

The personalised harness has a hook-and-loop patch (embroidered name, MyDogGrip logo or blank patch) and reflective stitching. The reflective harness has reflective strips and no patch. Both have a front clip, a back ring and a handle. Compare models

How do I measure my dog?

Measure the chest girth with your dog standing, just behind the front legs, using a soft tape measure that fits snugly without squeezing. Then compare with the size chart on the product page. Weight is only a guide. Measure without a tape measure

Will a no-pull harness stop my dog pulling?

It helps, but it is not magic. The front clip turns the dog towards you when they pull, which makes guiding easier, but the result mostly depends on loose-lead training. What the studies say

Should my dog keep a collar on with the harness?

A light collar is handy for carrying an ID tag. On walks, clip the lead to the harness rather than the collar.

Can my dog wear the harness all day?

No. Take it off at home and do not leave your dog unsupervised in the harness, to avoid rubbing and the risk of it getting caught.

Is the harness suitable for canicross or the car?

No. Our harnesses are designed for walks on the lead. For canicross, choose a pulling harness; in the car, a harness or crate tested for that purpose.

My dog is between two sizes: what should I do?

Write to us before ordering with their measurements and the model you have chosen: we will help you choose based on the harness adjustments. Write to us

What can I have embroidered on the patch?

Your dog’s name, up to 12 characters including spaces: letters (accents accepted), spaces, hyphens and apostrophes. You can also choose the patch with the MyDogGrip logo or a blank patch. The patch is included.

Will the colour I receive match the photo?

Each colour has its own photo on the product page: select a colour to see it. The colour may look slightly different depending on your screen.

How much does delivery cost?

France and Europe (European Union, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Norway): free delivery, no minimum order. Other countries we ship to: €29. The exact rate is shown before payment.

The size doesn’t fit: can I exchange it?

Yes, within 14 days of receipt: write to us before sending anything back, with your order number and the size you need. You send the harness back at your own cost and we ship the new size free of delivery charges. The patch attaches with hook and loop: you keep it. Returns and exchanges
