How to dry a harness after a walk in the rain?

The walk is over, your dog is back inside, but their harness is still damp. Should you put it on a radiator, wash it or simply hang it up?

Start by reading the care instructions for the model. Straps, padding, prints and accessories do not all tolerate the same treatment.

Remove moisture before putting the harness away

Take the harness off after the walk and look at its condition. If it is only wet, you can soak up the water by pressing it gently in a clean towel, without wringing it hard.

If it is muddy, follow the cleaning instructions rather than putting it away dirty and damp.

Remove detachable accessories only when their design allows it, and check their instructions separately.

Make sure air can circulate

For equipment whose instructions allow air drying, place it somewhere ventilated, with the different parts spread out.

Avoid leaving it bundled up in a bag or pressed against other damp things. Turn it over if one side stays flat against the surface.

Air drying is part of the care instructions for the Ruffwear Front Range, for example. This remains specific to that product: your harness’s instructions are still the reference.

Radiator, hairdryer or tumble dryer?

Do not use them without explicit instructions from the manufacturer. Direct heat may not suit some components.

Speeding up drying should not lead to a part becoming misshapen or a finish being damaged. A ventilated spot avoids having to improvise a drying temperature.

How do you know it is really dry?

Also check the thick parts, the folds and the areas under the straps. A surface that feels dry does not always mean all the padding is dry.

There is no universal drying time: the material, thickness, humidity and ventilation all change the time needed.

If a smell persists, check the washing instructions and the condition of the equipment. A fragrance replaces neither cleaning nor drying.

Setting up an airy spot near the front door is often enough to make this routine easier after every rainy walk.
